The Vicar's Letter - 04/05/2025

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The period leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection appeared as chaotic and confusing for his followers. Some of them thought that his death was the end of his ministry and mission; that nothing will follow, and they were thinking of how to go back to their careers before he called them to follow him. With nothing else to do they decided to go back fishing. We too must have gone through experiences which have taken us high, and then dropped us very low. We must have thought long and hard about our many decisions, and wondered if it was better to reverse them. In John 21.1-19 we are introduced to an interesting experience of restoration and renewal. After the disciples’ failure during Passion Week when they ran away, given up hope, and returned to their old lives, Jesus appeared to them on the beach. This is the same way he met them at the very beginning when he called them to join him in his ministry. He is reminding them of the original calling to jog their memories of what he had promised them, and to restore them to the mission. Jesus is saying not to give up, but keep your calling, despite many difficulties along the way.

Rev’d Jairo Nyaongo
